PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is one of the most popular video games in recent memory, hitting over 70 million unit sales already. On top of that, it has received critical acclaim, having won Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards in 2017 and getting nominated Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards in 2018. What’s more, hundreds of thousands worldwide are playing PUBG, and a few of them are the biggest athletes and celebrities in the world. Below are two athletes and two celebrities that are huge fans of the game, and whom you may have unknowingly battled.
Ben Simmons
Simmons is one of the bright young stars of the NBA, having made the All-Star Game three-times already. He is also being counted on to help lead the Philadelphia 76ers to their first NBA championship since 1983. That’s a lot of pressure for the 24-year-old Australian, who is also known as one of the league’s most avid gamers. And one of Simmons’s favourite games is PUBG, having competed in Episode 2 of the PUBG Mobile Team Up Superstar Showdown alongside fellow NBA players Lonzo Ball and Andre Drummond. He even streams his games on Twitch from time to time.
Terry Crews
Crews is a Hollywood A-Lister, most known for his TV roles as Lieutenant Terry Jeffords in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Julius Rock in Everybody Hates Chris. He was also part of the ensemble cast of The Expendables series as Hale Caesar. Aside from being an actor-comedian, Crews is known for being an activist, bodybuilder, and artist. But when he’s not busy, this former NFL player plays PUBG. He was initially drawn to the game upon its release in 2017 and has since become one of its most famous players. Today, Crews still finds time to play PUBG.
Demetrious Johnson
Johnson is known as one of MMA greatest fighters as evidenced by his dominant reign as the UFC’s flyweight champion. Mighty Mouse is second in a list of the longest-reigning UFC champions published by Bwin, having been champ for 2,142 days. He trails only Anderson Silva and is ahead of George St-Pierre, two fighters always considered in MMA’s GOAT talk. Parts of those championship days were spent playing PUBG, with Johnson even streaming his games — sometimes before and after a fight — on Twitch. Now with One, the Mighty Mouse will continue to live stream professionally.
Joel Thomas Zimmerman
Zimmerman, known professionally as Deadmau5, is an icon in electronic music. Underscoring his glowing reputation in the industry are his six Grammy Award nominations, four DJ Awards, and five Beatport Music Awards. Deadmau5 is also a known PUBG fan, using his expensive gaming rig to play the game’s PC version. He used to stream his games as well, and has even won a few PUBG charity tournaments. Plus, Deadmau5 has been known to boast about his PUBG exploits, once broadcasting highlights of himself defeating famous streamers like shroud and DrDisRespect.
